The Community Emergency Response Team Program educates people about disaster preparedness and hazards and trains them in basic disaster response skills. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.Members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in their community.

Assignment Alert Form

Book Discussion Kits
Knowing that it can be very difficult to place holds on multiple copies of books for group discussions, the Burlington Public Library has book group discussion kits for youth ages 11 and up.
The Burlington Public Library can support your curriculum by developing customized booklists, webliographies, and study guides tailored to the unique needs of your students. If you need book suggestions, you can call us or submit an Materials Request Form.
The library provides you and your students a myriad of resources. To help students, the library offers online databases <link to online databases page>, encyclopedias & websites, as well as thousands of print resources.
We also offer free academic resources and tutoring from Tutor.com . All students in grades K-12, college students and adult learners with a library card can use the service to get help with schoolwork. Professional online tutors are available each day from 3 until 10 pm to help with all math, science, social studies, and English subjects. The SkillsCenter Resource Library is available 24/7, and students can search by keyword and subject for worksheets, lessons, videos and more. Students can find resources for specific subjects, standardized tests, resume building, citizenship, GED prep, and college entrance exams.
InterLibrary Loan<LINK> (ILL) offers library customers the opportunity to request and receive books that are not owned by the Burlington Public Library. Theoretically, with ILL, you have access to the circulating book collections of all university and public libraries throughout the United States.
Downloadable Audio Books, eBooks, Magazines and Music

OneClickDigital - is a resource for downloadable audiobooks.
Zino - lets you check out digital magazines and read them on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Freegal - Freegal Music is a downloadable music service that gives patrons access to about 3 million songs in MP3 format.
Online Database Resources
The Library subscribes to a number of Online Databases<LINK>. A database is simply an online reference collection - magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, professional journals, and many other resources that you can use 24/7. Normally, you would have to pay to use these sites, but you can access them for free through the library's website if you have a Burlington Public Library card.
A few of the databases that Homeschool Families may be intereted in include:
LearningExpress - This program allows students to register and practice academic or licensing tests (e.g. PSAT, GED, MCAT)
Tell Me More Languages - This program helps students learn a language.
Schedule a class visit to the library. Bring your class to the library for a tour, story program, library orientation, and/or introduction to research. Call Angie, Youth Services Manager at 319.753.1647 to schedule a time.
Tumblebooks is an online collection of books ideal for readers of all ages from animated, talking picture books to read-along titles to full length, unabridged, streaming audio book classics. Older students will enjoy TumbleBookCloudJr and for Teens TumbleBookCloud
Free Classes and Events
Check our Online Calendar to see what the library is offering. We regulary offer childrens and teen programs such as storytimes, craft or book discussion groups that can be of interest to homeschoolers. Occasionally, we offer special programs targeting homeschool families.
... and of course, your Youth Librarians are available to answer questions about the Library's collections, and to find materials just right for your needs.

New homeschooling resources are added regularly. They are shelved with 649.68 in both the adult collection and the Parent Resources section in the library's Youth Department. The Youth Department also subscribes to Home Education Magazine and Practical Homeschooling as well as a number of other parenting and youth magazines.
